The PIKE 2008 is a specialized RAID controller card sold by ASUS for several of their server and workstation motherboards circa-2010. It contains an LSI 9220-8i SAS controller, which you can flash with 9211-8i firmware for use in IT mode (i.e. JBOD, for uses such as ZFS). In addition to SAS, the PIKE 2008 also supports SATA 3 (6Gbps SATA), an improvement over the 3Gbps onboard SATA on the boards which supported it.

Unlike most RAID cards, SAS devices are not connected to the PIKE 2008 directly. When installed in the pair of the backwards-facing, PCIe-like slots at the bottom of a compatible ASUS motherboard, the PIKE 2008 connects and enables 8 SAS ports on the motherboard itself, which are not usable without it.
