The ASUS M5A97 EVO2 motherboard was produced in two variants for prebuilt machines, M51BC and M52BC. The M51BC version is more complete; M52BC appears to be identical but with fewer components attached to the board. The M5A97 EVO2 is currently the smallest known FX AM3+ motherboard with both an IOMMU and ECC RAM support. The Supermicro H8SML is very similar, but supports only the Opteron AM3+ processors.

Motherboard Components

Socket AM3+

AMD Socket AM3+, also known as Socket AM3b or Socket AM3r2, is compatible with a subset of AMD Orochi processors. It is backwards compatible with K10 processors designed for the AM3 socket, but these are not yet supported by coreboot-15h.

Processors

Orochi FX (Zembezi and Vishera) and Opteron (Zurich and Delhi) processors are compatible with the AM3+ socket. TDP ratings for these processors range between 25 W and 220 W. Each AM3+ motherboard has a maximum supported TDP for CPUs. For example, the Supermicro H8SML is only designed to support up to 65 W processors.

AMD 970

The AMD 970, also known as the RX980, is a northbridge used with AM3+ processors. It has a total of 22 PCIe 2.0 lanes; providing one x16 slot, one x4 slot, and two x1 slots. The x16 slot can not be bifurcated. The RX980 supports HyperTransport 3.0 up to 2.4 GHz. It is often paired with the SB950 southbridge.

AsMedia ASM1042

The ASM1042 is a USB 3.0 extended host controller designed to provide two ports over PCIe. It is designed for high speed, low power data transmit, backward compatible with current USB2.0 standard and complies with Intel’s eXtensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) Revision 1.0.

Official Documentation

Realtek ALC892

The ALC892 provides ten DAC channels that simultaneously support 7.1 channel sound playback, plus 2 channels of independent stereo sound output (multiple streaming) through the front panel stereo outputs. Two stereo ADCs and one stereo digital microphone converter are integrated and can support a microphone array with Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), Beam Forming (BF), and Noise Suppression (NS) technologies.
